MISF 2021

2 plays. 5 actors. 37 roles.
Endless possibilities.

In August 2021, Starling Shakespeare Company was thrilled to present the first ever Mackinac Island Shakespeare Festival. These free-to-the-public performances in Marquette Park ran throughout the month, ensuring that island visitors, workers, and residents alike could see Romeo and Juliet and Much Ado About Nothing like they had never seen them before - against the timeless backdrop of Mighty Mac and the lakeshore views.

Both shows had small casts - a mere five actors - and though these casts be little, they are fierce! Performing the shows with only five actors allowed us not only to hold a COVID-friendly rehearsal process by creating our own bubble, but it also let us get creative with how we put on these big plays with so few people. These 90-minute performances, which featured actors playing multiple characters, and jumping back and forth between those characters at the drop of a hat - sometimes literally! - brought a unique level of energy and playfulness to the stories and to the Mackinac Island arts community.
