Auditions/Open Positions

Actor

Starling Shakespeare Company is now accepting auditions for their 2024 summer season! This contract includes both their summer tour and the Mackinac Island Shakespeare Festival. All members of the 5-person acting company will perform in both Twelfth Night and Henry IV, Part 1. Due to the nature of the performances, roles will be cast after the entire company is assembled, but actors can expect to be playing multiple roles in both shows. As a point of reference, actors are generally cast as somewhere between 2 and 7 roles in each show, depending on size of roles. All members of the company will participate in set-up and strike for each performance. Company members will also have various responsibilities based on skill, interest, and need, to be assigned throughout the production process (i.e. fight captain, dance captain, assisting with props/costumes, promotional material distribution, etc.).

In addition to performance/production responsibilities, company members may be asked to assist in teaching educational workshops. All training/instruction necessary will be supplied.

Starling Shakespeare Company is interested in clarity of storytelling and using voices and bodies to tell stories effectively. We are especially interested in a collaborative rehearsal room and performance space. SSC is committed to diverse and equitable casting practices. BIPOC actors, actors of all sizes, gender expressions, and sexual orientations are encouraged to submit.

Contract runs June 3-September 8, and consists of 6 weeks of rehearsals in Ripon, WI, ~3 weeks of touring throughout the Midwest, and a 4 week residency on Mackinac Island, MI. Housing and weekly $450 stipend provided throughout the contract. Although not a pre-employment condition, this position requires you to be up to date on COVID vaccinations/boosters as recommended by the CDC.

To submit your audition, please include a video recording of two contrasting classical monologues, your resume, and headshot. If you have musical abilities, you are welcome to include a song in your submission. If there are any other unique skills that you would like to showcase, you may include brief footage of those as well. Videos should be no longer 2.5 minutes for monologues only, or 3 minutes if they include music or other skill showcases. Submission packages should be uploaded here by March 8, 2024. Virtual callbacks will likely take place between March 11 and 13. If you run into difficulties with the link, please reach out to info@starlingshakespearecompany.com.

Designer

Starling Shakespeare Company is now accepting submissions for designers for their 2024 summer season! Contracts are available for both of their summer productions – TWELFTH NIGHT and HENRY IV, PART 1 - and candidates can apply for either or both productions. Designers will be responsible for design and construction of visual elements of the show. This consists primarily of costumes and props, but may include some limited set elements. Both productions are 5-actor touring shows, so an emphasis in design is placed on durability, as well as ease of transport. The designer will work closely with the director and producers, and is expected to be a self-starter with a strong ability to translate ideas into realities. Photos of past productions can be seen throughout our website to give a sense of past production elements.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • College Diploma in a related field; or the equivalent related work experience;

  • 3+ years of design experience;

  • Valid drivers license

  • Ability to set and meet deadlines with little oversight/supervision;

  • Although not a pre-employment condition, this position requires you to be up to date on COVID vaccinations/boosters as recommended by the CDC.

TWELFTH NIGHT contract runs June 3rd – 21st, and HENRY IV, PART 1 contract runs from June 24th-July 12th. Housing will be provided at our rehearsal location in Ripon, Wisconsin in addition to a $750 per week stipend per show (total of $2250/show).

To apply, please submit your resume, cover letter, and portfolio. Please indicate in your application which production you would like to be considered for, or if you are interested in working across both productions. Submission packages should be sent to info@starlingshakespearecompany.com no later than March 8, 2024.
